[New] Whistle Pig Bourbon 6 Year Review 2024 | Updated List

Whistle Pig Bourbon 6 Year Review 2024: Piggyback is a recent release from Whistlepig. Although it has been around for a while, I decided to pick up a bottle.

This rye whiskey is made from 100% rye and comes from Alberta, just like most of Whistlepig’s other products.

It is aged for 6 years, but it is likely a mix of ryes that are older than that.

The 96.56 proof reflects the birth year (1956) of Whistlepig’s Master Distiller, Dave Pickerell, who passed away in November 2018.

I usually enjoy Whistlepig’s products, especially their single barrel program and some of their releases like Boss Hog and the 18-year-old, which are some of the best whiskies I’ve tried.

At $49, I’m hoping this will be a good choice for a daily drink.

Whistlepig Piggyback Distillery

WhistlePig PiggyBack Rye Whiskey is made at the WhistlePig Distillery on a farm in Shoreham, Vermont, USA.

This distillery, founded in 2008, is famous for making some of the best rye whiskies in the world.

It focuses on making high-quality whiskey with a mix of tradition and innovation.

PiggyBack Rye Whiskey is one of their special creations.

It is made from 100% rye, which gives it a bold and spicy taste.

The whiskey is aged for six years in American oak barrels, adding a rich and deep flavor.

The cool and quiet farm setting helps the whiskey develop its unique character as it ages.

WhistlePig blends old-fashioned whiskey-making methods with modern ideas.

Their team, inspired by legendary distiller Dave Pickerell, has crafted this whiskey to be versatile.

You can enjoy it plain, with ice, or in cocktails.

WhistlePig’s focus on quality has made it a top name in rye whiskey, and PiggyBack Rye is a great example of its skill and dedication.

Whistlepig Piggyback Bourbon Tastings Notes

Color

Light Gold

Nose

Whistlepig 6-Year Piggyback Rye Whisky has a sweet and floral smell, with hints of baked apples, lemon peel, and fresh flowers.

You might also notice a touch of minerality and a little black pepper spice.

Its flavor matches the unique style Whistlepig is known for.

Palates

Whistlepig 6-Year Piggyback Rye Whisky has an earthy taste when first opened, but after a few days, it becomes sweeter and softer, with hints of vanilla and lemongrass.

The flavor starts sweet and ends with a gentle spice, staying smooth even though it has a strong 96.56 proof and is made entirely from rye.

The spice is mild, giving a balanced and pleasant experience without being too strong.

The texture is nice, but it might feel a bit light for those who prefer stronger flavors.

Finish

The finish of Whistlepig 6-Year Piggyback Rye Whisky is not too long or too short.

It has the usual rye spice, with hints of spearmint and clove that bring a bit of freshness.

These flavors nicely balance the smooth taste from earlier.

Whistle Pig Bourbon History

2007 – Founding:

WhistlePig Bourbon was started in 2007 by Raj Bhakta, a former entrepreneur with a love for whisky.

Bhakta bought a farm in Vermont to create a high-quality rye whiskey brand that would stand out.

2008 – The First Cask:

In 2008, Bhakta and his team brought rye whiskey from Canada and began aging it on a Vermont farm.

The goal was to let the unique climate of Vermont influence the flavor of the whiskey.

2010 – First Release:

WhistlePig’s first product, a 10-year-old rye whiskey, was released in 2010.

It was praised for its smooth, spicy taste and quickly gained a loyal following.

It was initially available in limited quantities.

2014 – Expansion to Bourbon:

In 2014, WhistlePig launched its first Bourbon, a 10-Year-Old Bourbon aged in American oak barrels.

This marked the brand’s move into offering more types of whiskey.

2015 – Recognition:

By 2015, WhistlePig had gained a lot of attention in the whiskey world.

Its rye whiskeys, especially the 10-Year-Old Rye, won several prestigious awards, building its reputation as a top craft whiskey brand.

2017 – The WhistlePig Farm:

In 2017, the WhistlePig farm in Vermont became fully operational.

The distillery began making its rye whiskey from start to finish, allowing the brand to have more control over the entire process, from growing the grain to bottling the whiskey.

2019 – Launch of Aged Rye and New Expressions:

WhistlePig introduced new whiskey lines, including “The Boss Hog” series, which are high-quality rye whiskeys aged in special casks.

The brand also released limited-edition whiskeys using innovative aging methods.

Present Day:

Today, WhistlePig is known worldwide for its premium rye whiskeys and bourbons.

The brand continues to experiment with aging techniques and small-batch production to stay as one of the top craft whiskey makers in the United States.

Final Thoughts

WhistlePig’s PiggyBack bourbon is a smooth and sweet whiskey with flavors of maple, brown sugar, and baking spices.

It may not have the complexity that some bourbon lovers prefer, as there’s an herbal taste that doesn’t add much to its overall flavor.

At 100 proof, it works well in cocktails, especially an Old Fashioned, where adding maple syrup brings out its sweetness.

While it may not be the best choice for drinking straight, it’s great for those who want an easy-to-drink whiskey or a solid mixer.

Fans of WhistlePig’s other whiskeys may enjoy its similar taste to the PiggyBack rye.
