Gordon’s Gin History

Gordon’s London Dry Gin started in 1769. It was created by Alexander Gordon, a Scottish man living in London.

He opened his first gin distillery in Southwark, then moved it to Clerkenwell in 1786.

He made a gin with a strong juniper taste, and the recipe has stayed the same for over 200 years.

Gordon’s gin became popular, especially with Royal Navy officers. It was sent to ports all around the world and became a symbol of British quality.

In 1898, the company joined with Charles Tanqueray & Co. to become Tanqueray Gordon & Co.

After Charles Gordon died in 1899, no family members were left in charge, but the brand continued to grow.

The green, square-shaped bottle was introduced in 1904. Gordon’s Sloe Gin came in 1906, and Special Old Tom Gin followed in 1921.

In the 1920s and 1930s, the brand added ready-made cocktails and new flavors like orange (1929) and lemon (1931) to match changing tastes.

In 1925, Gordon’s got a Royal Warrant from King George V, which is a special honor. In 1934, it opened its first U.S. distillery in New Jersey.

By 1962, Gordon’s had become the best-selling gin in the world.

In the UK, production moved to Essex in 1984, then to Fife, Scotland, in 1998, where it is still made today.

The label has a picture of a wild boar. This comes from an old story where a member of the Gordon family saved the King of Scotland from a wild boar.

It stands for courage and tradition.

Since the 1940s, Gordon’s has used the slogan “The Heart of a Good Cocktail,” showing its strong place in cocktail culture over the years.
