What makes this gin special is that it uses 22 plants picked by hand from Islay, plus 9 usual gin ingredients.

It is made slowly in an old copper still called “Ugly Betty,” which helps to get the best flavors.

The Botanist Gin is famous around the world because of where it comes from and how carefully it is made.

Botanist Gin Origin

The Botanist Gin is made at the Bruichladdich Distillery on the Isle of Islay in Scotland. The distillery started in 1881 and is famous for making both single malt Scotch whisky and The Botanist Gin. It is located in the Rhinns of Islay, an area known for its wild nature and many plants.

The Botanist Gin is special because it is Islay’s first and only dry gin. It uses 22 local plants picked by hand, like apple mint, bog myrtle, and wood sage, along with 9 common gin plants. This mix gives the gin a taste that shows the nature of Islay. The gin is made using a Lomond still called “Ugly Betty,” a rare way of making gin that adds rich and deep flavors.

Bruichladdich Distillery cares about making high-quality gin and protecting the environment. The Botanist Gin shows the island’s traditions and the distillery’s care for nature. If you want to see how the gin is made, the distillery offers tours where you can learn about the process and its history.

Botanist Gin Ingredients List

Two kinds of juniper are used to make this gin. One is called prostrate juniper (Juniperus communis subspecies), which grows in the open, low areas by the sea on the Rhinns of Islay. Only a very small amount of Juniperus communis is added.

The water used for this gin comes from a spring called “Dirty Dottie’s spring” on Octomore farm. This water is used both to make the gin and to bottle it.

The gin gets its flavor only from plants picked from nature nearby. No extra oils, essences, or flavorings are added. Using wild plants to add flavor to spirits is an old idea. Islay’s distillers used to add whatever plants they found to improve their whisky, which they made in small stills hidden in quiet valleys.

Botanist Gin Distillery

The Botanist Gin is made at the Bruichladdich Distillery on the Isle of Islay in Scotland. The distillery was started in 1881 by the Harvey brothers. They are known for using old, traditional ways to make their drinks, while also trying new ideas. In 2011, they created The Botanist Gin. It was the first dry gin made on the island of Islay.

The Botanist Gin is special because it uses 22 plants picked by hand from the island. Some of these are apple mint, bog myrtle, and heather flowers. These are mixed with nine usual gin plants like juniper berries and citrus peels. This mix gives the gin a rich and fresh taste. The gin is made in a special still called “Ugly Betty,” which is one of the few stills left like this. It helps to slowly and carefully bring out the flavors.

Bruichladdich Distillery is now part of the Rémy Cointreau Group. They keep making high-quality drinks that show the unique spirit of Islay.

Botanist Gin Distillation

The Botanist gin is made carefully in several steps. First, nine special plants like seeds, berries, bark, roots, and peels are soaked overnight in pure wheat alcohol mixed with clean spring water from Islay. Next, the alcohol vapor passes through a basket filled with handpicked leaves and petals, adding extra flavors. This double process gives the gin its unique and rich taste.

The gin is then slowly made in a rare still called “Ugly Betty,” which takes 17 hours. This long process helps capture all the fine flavors of the plants. The result is a smooth, well-balanced gin with gentle herbal notes and a fresh, lively taste that reminds you of the wild nature of Islay.

Because of this careful and traditional way of making it, the Botanist is known and loved all around the world.
