Beefeater Gin History
Beefeater Gin started in 1862 when a man named James Burrough, born in 1835, bought a small distillery in Chelsea, London, for £400.
The distillery was previously owned by John Taylor. At first, James kept making the same drinks the old owners had made, like liqueurs, which helped grow the business and build a good name.
By 1863, James began making his own style of gin.
Over time, he created several types of gin with names like Ye Old Chelsea, James Burrough London Dry, and Old Tom.
He kept testing different ingredients and finally created a strong, flavourful gin using nine special plant-based ingredients: juniper, angelica root and seeds, coriander seeds, liquorice, almonds, orris root, seville oranges, and lemon peel. This became Beefeater Gin.
Beefeater was a big hit and became the main product of the company.
In 1908, a new distillery was built in Lambeth to keep up with demand.
Later in 1958, the company moved to Kennington and added copper stills to match the original equipment from Chelsea.
The Burrough family owned Beefeater until 1987, when a company called Whitbread bought it.
Later, it became part of Pernod Ricard. In 2013, they started building a visitor centre at the Kennington site.
Even today, Beefeater is made almost the same way James Burrough did in the 1860s.
In the U.S., it was once known for its strong 47% alcohol content, but this was lowered to 44% in 2020 and then to 40% in 2023 to match global trends—without losing its rich and bold flavor.
