1825 – Port Ellen is Founded:
Port Ellen Distillery was started in 1825 on the Isle of Islay, Scotland, by Alexander Mackay.
It was in a good spot near the sea and became known for making peated (smoky) single malt Scotch whisky, a style popular on Islay.
1836 – John Ramsay Takes Over:
In 1836, John Ramsay became the owner and made many improvements to the distillery.
He helped spread the name of Port Ellen whisky to places like the United States and Europe, building its international reputation.
1929 – First Time it Closes:
The distillery stopped making whisky in 1929 because the market wasn’t doing well and the economy was tough.
People thought it might never open again.
1967 – Reopening:
After being closed for almost 40 years, Port Ellen reopened in 1967 because Islay whisky was in demand again.
This time, it mostly made whisky for blending into brands like Johnnie Walker.
1983 – Final Closure:
In 1983, Port Ellen was closed for good by its owners, Diageo, because there was too much whisky in stock and not enough demand.
The equipment was taken away, but the remaining whisky became very valuable.
2001 – First Single Malt Bottling:
In 2001, Diageo started releasing small batches of Port Ellen single malt from the remaining casks.
These bottles became highly prized by collectors because of their rarity and quality.
2017 – Plans to Restart:
In 2017, Diageo announced that Port Ellen would be rebuilt, with whisky production expected to start again by 2021.
They planned to use both old and new techniques to honor the distillery’s history.
Today:
Port Ellen is one of the most famous and collectible whiskies in the world.
Though new whisky hasn’t been released yet, the older limited-edition bottles are still celebrated for their smoky, sea-influenced flavor.
Collectors consider Port Ellen an iconic name in whisky.
