Danny Kahn, the Master Distiller at Barton 1792, has been key in making these bourbons since he joined Barton in 2018.

Kirkland Single Barrel Bourbon History
Kirkland began buying bourbon from Barton Distillery in Kentucky at the start of 2021.
Now, their bourbon collection includes three types: Small Batch, Bottled-in-Bond, and Single Barrel.
Before this, Kirkland’s bourbon came from Jim Beam and George Dickel.
By partnering with Barton, which is part of the Sazerac Company known for its bourbon-making, Kirkland benefits from their expertise.
The Single Barrel bourbon is special because it’s made from just one barrel, giving it a unique flavor compared to blended bourbons.

Kirkland Bourbon Mash Bill
The exact grain mix used to make Kirkland Bourbon isn’t known, but it’s thought to be similar to 1792 Bourbon, a well-known Kentucky whiskey.
A “mash bill” is the blend of grains used in whiskey, typically made up of mostly corn, with some rye and malted barley.
Although it’s not confirmed, the mash bill for Kirkland and 1792 Bourbon is believed to be around 74% corn, 18% rye, and 8% malted barley.
The high amount of rye is believed to give the whiskey a bold and spicy flavor.

Kirkland Single Barrel Bourbon Vs Bottled in Bond
Kirkland Single Barrel Bourbon stands out because each bottle comes from a different barrel, giving each bottle a unique taste.
This can be great if you like trying different flavors, but it also means each bottle might taste a bit different from the next.
On the other hand, Kirkland Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon is known for being consistent.
It is made following strict rules: from one distillery in a single season, aged for at least four years, and bottled at 100 proof.
This ensures a steady, classic bourbon flavor, but it might not have the unique character of single-barrel bourbon.
So, if you like varied and unique flavors, single-barrel bourbon might be for you.
If you prefer a consistent and traditional bourbon taste, then the bottled-in-bond option is a reliable choice.

Kirkland Single Barrel Bourbon Ratings
Kirkland Single Barrel Bourbon is a great buy in the $30-35 price range.
It stands up well against other high-quality bourbons like Elijah Craig Small Batch and Russell’s Reserve 10 Year.
Plus, it comes in a 1-liter bottle, which is 30% more than the usual 750ml size, making it a better deal.
This bourbon has a mix of flavors, including sweet, earthy, herbal, and fruity notes, adding to its enjoyment.
Costco’s approach is to offer good quality at lower prices, and this bourbon fits that idea well.
It doesn’t have all the features of the very best bourbons, but it’s still a solid pick.
It might not be as strong as 1792 Full Proof, but its fruity and smooth qualities make it a good choice.
Overall, Kirkland Single Barrel Bourbon is highly recommended for its value and quality.
It’s a great option for personal use or as a gift, though it might not always be available.

Conclusions
I had a different experience with two whiskies.
The first one smelled fruity, similar to a Bottled-in-Bond (BIB) whiskey I tried before, but then it tasted very oaky.
The BIB Kirkland bourbon I had earlier had a banana candy flavor, while this one was so dry and woody that I needed a glass of water.
For me, the Kirkland BIB is the better choice.
However, if you like strong wood and oak flavors, this bourbon might be great for you.
Keep in mind, that this experience could be different depending on the barrel my bottle came from.
The Kirkland Single Barrel at your store might taste different because of barrel variations.
Even though I did not find this Kirkland Single Barrel as impressive as the BIB version, it is still a good value.
It is under $30 in Southern California for a strong, single-barrel bourbon.
Jim Beam’s Old Grand Dad 114 is a close competitor but is getting harder to find.
While this Kirkland Single Barrel might not be as exciting as the BIB, it is still a great whiskey that I would buy again if I saw it.
