Hoegaarden Beer History

Hoegaarden, a village famous for its white beers since the Middle Ages, had 13 breweries and nine distilleries by the 1800s.

However, in 1957, the last wheat beer brewery, Tomsin, closed.

In 1967, Pierre Celis, a milkman who had helped at a local brewery, decided to bring back the tradition.

He started brewing in a hay loft and set up the de Kluis brewery using ingredients like water, yeast, wheat, hops, coriander, and dried Laraha orange peel.

By the 1980s, more people wanted his beer, so Celis bought an old lemonade factory, Hougardia, to grow his business.

After a fire in 1985, Belgium’s biggest brewery, Interbrew, helped him rebuild.

But Celis soon felt pressured by Interbrew to change his beer’s recipe to suit a wider market.

He eventually sold the brewery and used the money to open the Celis Brewery in Austin, Texas, where he continued brewing his version of Hoegaarden.

Though Celis didn’t move fully to Texas, his daughter and son-in-law ran the brewery until Miller Brewing bought it, then closed it down.

Later, Michigan Brewing Company bought the brand and equipment, but also went bankrupt. Meanwhile, the original Celis White recipe continued to be brewed in Belgium by Brouwerij van Steenberge.

In 2004, Interbrew merged with AmBev to create InBev, which planned to close the original Hoegaarden brewery by 2006 and move production to a larger site in Jupille.

This decision upset locals, who didn’t want to lose their village’s brewing history.

In 2007, InBev changed its mind and decided to keep brewing in Hoegaarden, investing €60 million to upgrade the facilities and preserve the village’s brewing legacy.
