Amstel Beer Brewery (History)
The Amstel Brewery was started in 1870 by Charles Antoine de Pesters, Johannes Hendrikus van Marwijk Kooy, and Willem Eduard Uhlenbroek.
De Pesters and Van Marwijk Kooy were brothers-in-law from wealthy Amsterdam families, and they set up the brewery near the Amstel River.
Uhlenbroek’s family ran a small sugar factory in Amsterdam. The first stone of the brewery was placed on June 11, 1870, and the first beer was brewed on October 25, 1871.
By January 9, 1872, the beer was ready for customers, and the brewery officially opened on January 15, 1872.
The brewery could produce 10,000 hectoliters of beer each year, and Amstel beer became very popular, especially in Amsterdam.
As the train system in the Netherlands grew, the brewery spread to other areas and started working with agents in towns along the new railways.
In 1883, Amstel beer began to be sold in Great Britain and the Dutch East Indies.
In 1884, a special factory was set up to make “tropical” beers for export, ensuring the beer was pasteurized and packed for overseas markets.
In 1891, the brewery became a public company called Beiersch Bierbrouwerij De Amstel. By 1915, the brewery’s production had grown twenty times, and by 1926, Amstel was responsible for a third of all Dutch beer exports.
In 1941, Amstel, along with Heineken, bought the Van Vollenhoven’s Brewery in Amsterdam, which closed in 1961.
In the middle of the 20th century, Amstel expanded internationally, building breweries in places like Dutch Guiana, Jordan, Curaçao, Puerto Rico, and Greece.
In 1968, Heineken International bought Amstel and moved production to the Heineken factory in Zoeterwoude in 1972.
The famous Mauritskade brewery in Amsterdam was torn down, and only the office building remains, now part of the Hogeschool van Amsterdam.
By the late 20th century, Heineken rebranded Spain’s El Águila beer to Amstel, helping the brand grow even more worldwide.
