In 1888, White Oak Distillery was founded in Akashi City, Japan.
At first, they mainly made sake and shochu, traditional Japanese drinks, as whisky wasn’t yet popular in Japan.
In 1919, White Oak became one of Japan’s first distilleries to get a whisky license.
Although they only produced small amounts, this was an important start for Japanese whisky at White Oak.
White Oak had tested whisky production before, but in 1984, they decided to make whisky a priority.
Akashi City’s coastal weather, with warm summers and cool winters, provided ideal conditions for aging whisky in barrels.
The distillery introduced the Akashi brand in 2007, named after Akashi City.
Akashi whisky became popular in Japan for its unique style, combining Japanese skills with Scotch whisky influence.
In 2018, White Oak released Akashi Blue Whisky, a premium product aged in barrels made from bourbon, sherry, and Japanese oak.
