Asahi Beer Breweries History

Asahi Group Holdings, one of Japan’s most prominent beverage companies, traces its origins back to 1889 when it began as Asahi Breweries.

In 1893, the company reorganized into Ōsaka Breweries, which later merged in 1906 with Nippon Breweries and Sapporo Breweries to create Dai-Nippon Breweries.

Interestingly, during World War I, German prisoners worked within the brewery.

Following World War II, under the directives of the Allied Powers, the company was split to prevent economic monopolies, leading to the re-establishment of Asahi Breweries, separate from what became Sapporo Breweries.

In 1989, the company adopted its name in katakana, and in 2011 transitioned into a holding company, Asahi Group Holdings, with Asahi Breweries Ltd. as its subsidiary.

Over the years, Asahi pursued significant international expansion.

In 1990, it took a 19.9% stake in Elders IXL (later Foster’s Group), which it eventually sold. In 2009, it acquired Schweppes Australia and also became the second-largest stakeholder in China’s Tsingtao Brewery.

Its international footprint widened further in 2011 with acquisitions in New Zealand including Charlie’s, P&N Beverages’ water and juice divisions, and Independent Liquor.

In subsequent years, it bought Mill Liquorsave, Cricketers Arms, and Mountain Goat Brewery.

In 2016, Asahi purchased Grolsch, Peroni, and Meantime Breweries for €2.3 billion, followed by the $7.3 billion acquisition of SABMiller’s operations in Eastern Europe, adding renowned brands like Pilsner Urquell, Kozel, Tyskie, and Lech to its portfolio.

The company divested its stake in Tsingtao in 2017 for $937 million. In 2019, Asahi acquired Fuller’s beer division, including Griffin Brewery and Dark Star.

By 2020, it captured nearly half of Australia’s beer market with the $16 billion acquisition of Carlton & United Breweries.

Most recently, in January 2024, its global wing, Asahi Europe & International, expanded into the U.S. by acquiring Octopi Brewing, a key co-packing and contract production facility in Wisconsin.

Through strategic acquisitions and brand diversification, Asahi has steadily evolved from a domestic brewer to a global beverage powerhouse.
